Design Team
West, Inc. architects for this project had to meet with Nantucket’s
Historic District Commission (HDC).
There were very strict guidelines regarding exterior finishes,
materials, colors, heights,
and landscaping. The design was restricted to a one story appearance
from the exterior with a gable roof and maximum building height of 35’.
In order to meet HDC requirements but yet provide a four story climate
controlled storage facility; the design included 2 floors
below grade. One floor at grade and the fourth floor tucked in the gable
of the roof.
The property is at an
elevation of 50’ above sea level and the water table is approximately 7’
above sea level, 43’ below grade. The soil is coarse sand, which drains
very quickly which allowed the hole (known on the island as “the Big
Dig” of Nantucket.) to be excavated without dewatering. (www.nantucketstorage.com) |
